Elective – Ophthalmology Nursing Science:

1. On completion of this programme the learner should demonstrate the ability to:-
Conduct a comprehensive health assessment and diagnosis of clients / patients, groups and communities in order to:-
– Conduct campaigns designed to preserve sight and prevent visual impairment.
– Involve the community in rehabilitation programmes for the visually impaired / blind client.

2. Utilise ophthalmic nursing knowledge in the: –
– Assessment of visual status
– Genetic counselling re ophthalmic conditions
– To plan and assist the surgeon intra-operatively in order to meet the needs of the patient, surgeon and the operative procedure
Implement and evaluate ophthalmic nursing care plans for clients / patients in the health unit / operating room / community setting
Triage, diagnose and implement ophthalmic nursing care plans for acute ocular emergencies
Psychological assessment of the hospitalised client with an ophthalmic condition.

Participation in formulation and implementation of institutional policies for the safe use of technology
Evaluate the process and outcome of the use of technology in ophthalmology
Educate staff and patients with regard to the use of technological aids
