The student will demonstrate achievement of the learning outcome by being able to:

Assessment criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

1.
Conduct a holistic health assessment of individuals, infants and families.
Collect, analyse and interpret data against a body of scientific knowledge.
Formulate a nursing diagnosis.
Identify risk factors and areas for improvement of health care.
Identify health needs, priorities and set objectives for a plan of care and health services.
Outline and document the plan, including short and long-term goals utilising time frames.
Create a therapeutic environment to meet the needs of the individual, family, group and community.
Implement planned interventions with active involvement of individuals, families and members of the health team.
Develop a discharge plan in collaboration with individuals, family members and the health care team.
Adequately monitor progress of clients and the outcome of interventions and change the plan of nursing care where necessary.
Conduct a comprehensive environmental assessment, identify risk factors, plan, implement and evaluate changes.

2.
Demonstrate knowledge, skill and understanding of the physical and psycho-social responses, as well as the immediate needs of the individuals, families and communities facing emergencies and disaster.
Compile an appropriate emergency care and life-saving plan for an individual, a group, a community and an institution.
Participate with communities and other stakeholders in the management of emergency situations.

3.
Apply knowledge of the cost of human and material resources.
Identify and promote cost containing measures without compromising on the quality of care.
Demonstrate effective leadership skills and functions as a team member.

4.
Demonstrate knowledge of the role and function of other stakeholders in health care.
Demonstrate the ability to work well in a team.
Develop inter-professional relationships with the aim to promote Primary Health Care.

5.
Apply the scientific process of nursing and Primary Health Care principles to the nursing care of individuals, families and communities.
Demonstrate ethical behaviour in own practice.
Respond creatively to the health care needs of society.
Respond with sensitivity to cultural needs, values and beliefs of clients.
Render nursing and health care within the relevant legal parameters, including the South African Nursing Council regulations and the Nursing Act.
Utilise available policies and protocols to render quality Nursing care.

6.
Take responsibility to ensure continuous professional and personal development.
Identify learning needs of self for enhancing knowledge and skills and improving practice.
Explore and use opportunities for professional development.
Participate in self-directed learning activities aimed at improving knowledge and skills.
Assume responsibility for life-long learning.

7.
Advocate for the rights of patients as enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa and the Patient’s Charter to advocate for improvement of health care.
Uphold the Batho Pele principles in dealing with clients and the public.
Demonstrate the application of the advocacy process in dealing with individuals, families and the public.
Identify and utilise relevant resources to ensure quality health care.

8.
Discuss issues in relation to safety and human rights in the workplace.
Participate in promotion and protection of human rights of clients, nurses and the public in health care settings.
Demonstrate sound knowledge of disciplinary procedures, grievance handling procedure and codes of conduct, relevant to the maintenance of good labour relations.

Assessment criteria associated with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

1.
Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills across the cultural spectrum when dealing with all stakeholders including clients.
Give appropriate health education to individuals and groups including the use of resources.
Keep clear, accurate and complete records of nursing practice.
Communicate effectively with all age groups and those people with disabilities
Work effectively in a team.
Uphold the Batho Pele principles in the communication processes with the public.

2.
Raise and explore questions, identify problems and distinguish between problems within the Scope of Practice and those that need referral.
Select the best alternative solution for a problem.
Evaluate and reflect on the results, find alternatives and implement practices with the relevant players.
Apply problem-solving skills related to nursing situations of patients with physical illness.
Develop and apply problem-solving skills with stakeholders and partners in health care services.

3.
Utilise technology appropriately for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of health care service delivery.
Use appropriate processes, techniques, tools and materials to solve problems, create and evaluate products and communicate results.
Use relevant equipment and technology in health settings, safely and ethically within his/her Scope of Practice.

4.
Display use of an ethical and moral framework and an accepted scientific method of when doing research.
Identify actual and potential problem areas in nursing and health research in order to improve or maintain quality care.
Collect, analyse and interpret data against a body of scientific knowledge of nursing and health related matters to improve the quality of care.
Initiate, design and implement a research plan, interpret findings, communicate the results, facilitate the implementation of change and critically analyse outcomes.

5.
Display effective listening and interviewing skills.
Demonstrate knowledge of legislation of labour relations and the health and safety of all stakeholders.

6.
Correct identification of organisational and socio-economic influences.

Integrated assessment:

Assessment/evaluation in the programme is based on an integrated approach that includes formative and summative assessment/evaluation.
